About Us
Sacramento Contact Lenses and Optometry, Inc. was founded in 1982 by Drs Smiley and Shlyakhov. Today, we are the leading contact lens and family vision practice in Northern California, providing quality eye care to over 42,000 patients at our offices in Sacramento and Roseville. We are proud of our highly competent, progressive, caring, and efficient delivery of eye and vision care to the patients. To our patients we represent stability, and continuity of care. We excel in contact lens fitting and care for adults, teenagers and children, ranging from routine to highly complicated and exotic cases. We commonly see referrals for complicated contact lens cases from doctors in other states and abroad. Our modern optical departments carry unique styles of eyewear and the latest in optical lenses and materials and are staffed only by experienced opticians.

Dr. Gene Shlyakhov, O.D.
Completed his undergraduate degree in physiology at UC Berkeley. Received his Doctorate from the UC Berkeley School of Optometry in 1980, where he later served as a Clinical Instructor and an Associate Clinical Professor in the Children’s Vision and Strabismus Clinic. Completed residency at Letterman Hospital, US Army Presidio in San Francisco and externship at Western Blind Rehabilitation Center, VA Hospital in Palo Alto, CA. Certified by the International Board of Examiners in Optometry in diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases. Earned PRK and LASIK certifications by most laser facilities in Sacramento and the Bay Area. Engaged in private practice with emphasis on specialty contact lenses, keratoconus, and pediatric optometry since the early 1980’s. Holds an MBA degree from UC Davis and serves as a part-time faculty at CSUS. Likes skiing, fishing, arts and theatre. Speaks Russian and Italian.
Dr. Thomas Smiley, O.D.
Completed his undergraduate degree in cell biology at UCLA. Holds his Doctorate from UC Berkeley School of Optometry since 1980, where he also instructed in the Special Services Clinic. Completed residency at Letterman Hospital, US Army Presidio in San Francisco. Certified by the International Board of Examiners in Optometry in diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases. Earned PRK and LASIK co-management certifications by most laser facilities in the Sacramento area and the Bay Area. Engaged in private practice with emphasis on specialty contact lenses for adults and children, keratoconus and cataract co-management since the early 1980’s. Dr. Smiley is an accomplished water-skier, antique and muscle car expert, and a stock car racer.
Dr. Veronica Barber, O.D., F.A.A.O.
Completed her undergraduate degree in bioscience at the Sacramento State University. Received her Doctorate from the UC Berkeley School of Optometry in 2002. Served in the U. S. Air Force as Chief of Contact Lenses at Randolph AFB in San Antonio, TX. There, she also provided pre- and post-operative care to refractive surgery patients in coordination with the Wilford Hall Medical Center. Served as an Adjunct Clinical Professor at Houston School of Optometry from 2002-2004. Certified by the International Board of Examiners in Optometry in diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases. Joined Sacramento Contact Lenses and Optometry in 2005. Dr Barber enjoys Latin music, hiking, skiing, kayaking, gardening, and caring for her pet turtles.
Dr. Shea Patrick earned her
B.S. degree in Biology from the University of
California, Davis and received her Doctor of
Optometry degree from Indiana University. She
spent three months of her training in
Guanajuato, Mexico seeing patients from an
indigent population. She practices
comprehensive optometry including co-management
of laser vision and post-operative cataract
patients. She joined Sacramento Contact Lenses
and Optometry in March 2008. Dr. Patrick enjoys
spending time with family, road trips, and the
outdoors.
Lorie Deering,
Office Manager of our Sacramento office, has enjoyed working in the optometric field since 1990. She is a certified optician, as well as a contact lens and paraoptometric technician. She is a former chair of the California Paraoptometric Section and is committed to the training and advancement of our staff. She is highly proficient in vision insurance and will always take the time to help our patients understand their options. She has extensive knowledge and flair for fitting each patient with the perfect eyewear matching their life style, their face structure and their budget. Lorie enjoys cooking, traveling and shopping. She especially loves matching all her eyewear with her outfits.
Sieglinde Buchmiller, our optical manager, has had over 30 years of experience in the optical field. She joined our office in 1990. She is an expert in frame styles and all the optical materials. She will make you love your eyewear. Sieglinde is responsible for our exquisite selection of optical frames, sunglasses, and accessories. She is highly competent and meticulous about her job. Her expertise is behind the many complements that our patients receive on their eyeglasses from their friends and co-workers. She likes opera, classical music and travel.
Danny Malloy, the lead optician, expertly ensures that your eyeglass prescriptions are filled correctly by crafting your glasses with the highest degree of accuracy. Danny started in the optical business in 1972, is fully certified by the ABO, and has been with our office since 1994. Danny is also in charge of quality assurance, frame and lens repairs, maintenance of eyeglass lens inventory, and communications with optical laboratories. Danny loves music, sports and outdoors.
Ginger Himelright, the Roseville office manager has worked in the optometry field since 1992, and has managed our Roseville office since 2001. Ginger is great in all aspects of the optometric office, from contact lenses to insurance billing, frame selection and front desk duties. She always has the cheerful disposition, professional attitude, and high degree of efficiency and caring. She likes camping, hiking and sports cars.
